Happy 48th National Day

Singapore celebrates 48th national day.
This year's theme is "Many Stories, One Singapore".

Looking back since the day we started, we gone through a lot. This is our story...

1965 - Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, our former PM announced the separation from Malaya (Malaysia) and its independence of its nation. Mr. Yusof bin Ishak became the first President of Singapore. At the same year on 21st September, Singapore joined the United Nations as a new state.

From the day announced of its independence, a nation without its own resources have to depend on its own. Nobody would think that we would survived. But we did!

1966 - Singapore celebrates its first National Day Parade (NDP) at Padang.

1967 - Singapore found the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). At the same year, Defence Minister, Mr. Goh Keng Swee announced that all 18-year-old able bodied men were enlisted into National Service (NS)

1968 - British announced the withdrawn of its military forces. Same year in April, PAP won its first General Election since its independence.

1970 - Mr. Yusof Bin Ishak passed away and Dr. Benjamin Henry Shears succeed became the second President of Singapore.

1971 - The last withdrawn of British Military

1972 - Singapore Airlines was formed.

1973 - First Chingay Parade was held. Construction of National Stadium was completed.

1979 - Singapore became the world second busiest port in terms of shipping tonnage.

1981 - Singapore Changi Airport started operation. Same year, Mr. C V Devan Nair became the third President of Singapore.

1985 - Mr. Wee Kim Wee became the fourth President of Singapore.

1986 - Hotel New World collapses, killed 33 people.

1990 - The MRT was completed and introduced its first line, East West Line. At the same year, Changi Airport Terminal 2 began its operations. Mr. Goh Chok Tong became the second Prime Minister of Singapore. Mr. Lee Kuan Yew stepped down as Senior Minister.

1991 - 4 Pakistanis hijack Singapore Airlines Flight 117 and demand the release of Pakistan People Party,  members from Pakistanis jail. Members from Singapore Special Operational Forces came in and killed all hijackers and free all crew members and passengers,

1993 - Mr. Ong Teng Cheong became the first elected President.

1999 - Mr. S R Nathan became the next elected President. Same year, Singapore faced with recession during this Asian Financial Crisis.

2003 - SARS outbreak in Singapore

2004 - National Service reduced from 2 and 1/2 years to 2 years. At the same time, Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's son became the 3rd Prime Minister of Singapore. Mr. Goh Chok Tong stepped down as Senior Minister and Mr. Lee Kuan Yew stepped down as Minister of Mentor. Nicoll Highway collapses, killed 4 people.

2005 - Mr. S R Nathan walkover the election and continue to serve second term of its appointment.

2008 - Singapore Changi Airport opens its 3rd terminal. In the same year, the International Olympic Committee awards the Youth Olympic Games hosting right to Singapore. Singapore faced the worst global financial crisis and slips into recession. The very first time, Singapore government took out $150 billion and also the first time for Mr. S R Nathan to take out the reserve to deal with the crisis.

2011 - The first time in General Election, PAP loses its one GRC to the Workers' Party. In August, Mr. S R Nathan stepped down. He served as a President for 12 years, the longest term throughout the previous President. Election of the President took place where 4 candidates complete. Dr. Tan Keng Yam Tony became the 7th President and the 3rd elected President.

 2013 - Singapore faced the worst haze in Singapore having its Pollutant Standard of Index (PSI) hit 401.
