Swearing In Ceremony2 September 2011 Yesterday night (1 September), swearing in of the 7th President, Dr. Tony Tan took place. Mr. S R Nathan would retired from the office and Dr. Tony Tan would take over and serve our nation. Below is the Video produced from Channel News Asia, the Swearing in Ceremony! Former Singapore Presidents: Mr. Yusof Bin Ishak (1910 - 1970) [3 December 1959 - 23 November 1970] He became the first Yang di-Pertuan Negara in 3 Dec 1959 when Singapore became a self-governed country. 9 August 1965 where Singapore became an independent and sovereign state, he became the first President of the Republic of Singapore. He was re-appointed for another 4 years on 4 Dec 1967. However, he passed away during his term in office on 23 November 1970. Dr. Benjamin Henry Sheares (1907 - 1981) [2 January 1971 - 12 May 1981] He was elected by the Parliament as the 2nd President of the Republic of Singapore. He held in its office until his death on 12 May 1981. Mr. C V Devan Nair (1923 - 2005) [23 October 1981 - 28 March 1985] He was elected by the Parliament the 3rd President of the Republic of Singapore. He served as the President until his resignation on 28 Mar 1985. Dr. Wee Kim Wee (1915 - 2005) [2 September 1985 - 1 September 1993] He was elected by the Parliament the 4th President of the Republic of Singapore on 30 August 1985. In January 1991, Singapore Parliament amended the constitution and allow for the direct election of the President. As an elected President, he would have the right of veto over civil service appointments and hold the second key of the government reserves. (6-year term for an Elected President) Dr. Wee decided not to enter his candidacy and he decided to retired once he completed his term in office. Mr. Ong Teng Cheong (1936 - 2002) [1 September 1993 - 31 August 1999] He was the first Elected President and the 5th President of the Republic of Singapore. During this election, there were 2 candidates participated. Mr. Ong himself and Mr. Chua Kim Yeow, a former accountant general. Mr. Ong won the election by about 300, 000 votes. Mr. S R Nathan (1924 - present) [1 September 1999 - 31 August 2011] He was the 2nd Elected President and the 6th President of the Republic of Singapore. During the Presidential Election in 1999, he was elected unopposed on Aug 18, 1999. When his 6-year term in 2005 was up, he seeking for re-election as a President. He submitted its application to the Election Department. On 13 Aug 2005, the Election Department issued a Certificate of Eligiblilty to Mr. Nathan. Although there were three people submitted their forms, the Elections Department only issued it to Mr. Nathan. Since he was uncontested in 2005, he was re-elected again for another 6-year term. On July 2011, he decided not to seek another term in office because of its age considerations. He retired from office in 31 Aug 2011. Dr. Tony Tan Keng Yam (1940 - present) [1 September 2011 - present] He was the 3rd Elected President and the 7th President of the Republic of Singapore. During the Presidential Election in 2011, he was completing with three candidates. This election was known to be the most competitive election in 18 years!
